Day 4 Korea Cross Country Cycle Route

Hanam to Yangpyeong 

Tunnels, Flowers and Sausages on Sticks

Today is Saturday, and as we found out, it's cycle day for the Koreans. Thousands were out on the bikeways cycling everything from folding bikes to full time trial outfits, and everyone was courteous and friendly.

We took a short detour off the bike path to Semiwon Lotus Gardens. Unfortunately we were a bit late in the season and only saw a handful of Lotus flowers. Still, beautiful gardens with other flowers, fountains, statues and plenty of places to wander. We even came across Australian water lilies. Halfway across the globe to see our own local flowers!

We'd seen people wandering around with something on a stick, and eventually found a few stalls selling them. Best described as a sweet hot dog on a stick. A sausage wrapped in a bread-donut thing, rolled in sugar and drizzled with honey mustard and tomato sauce. Unusual, but it actually tasted quite nice.

Back on the bike route we followed an old railway corridor - eight tunnels, some old stations and train carriages.  

Cycling into Yangpyeong we passed the art museum when amongst other sculptures we were surprised to see Michelangelo's David 😯.

Now to find a motel. Alex found something online but when we got there the outside looked rather dubious - a single dark doorway surrounded by red lights….. After a bit of do we our don't we? I bravely encouraged Alex to go inside. It turned out perfectly fine with our room being American-styled, with photos of the USA covering the walls.

The street outside is happening: people strolling, strings of lights, street food, game arcades, restaurants and, of course, at least three convenience stores within 500 metres.

After a shower and a rest, Alex decided it was Korean fried chicken and beer night. We wandered the street for an hour or so before settling on a street side stall selling freshly cooked chicken. Bought a beer from a supermarket and took dinner back to the USA (room) to eat. Alex's dinner craving fulfilled 😀.
