Day 8 Korea Cross Country Cycle Route
Chungju to Yeonpung Village

Today it was time to tackle some hills!

After a filling hotel breakfast of toast with cheese and jam, we set off. Once again we were treated to stunning river reflections, and cycling towards the Sujupal peaks was absolutely beautiful. Below a suspension bridge we found Koreans camped by the river, a very scenic spot. We took a short walk over the bridge before cycling on.

We continued our gradual uphill into Suanbo for a break and lunch. There are pheasant statues out the front of shops all over town. Suanbo is apparently well known for its pheasant meals.

From there the real climbing started, up and over Sojo Mountain Pass. We didn't find it too bad, and after the top we rolled down a few kilometres to Suok Falls. Very pretty! Then it was mostly downhill all the way to Yeonpung Village.

Yeonpung is a small rural village where locals sit outside their front doors and chat with passersby. Everyone seems to know everyone. We visited Yeonpung Holy Land, the Martyr Shrine and its cathedral, with ornate carved doors and stained glass windows. There are apple statues all around town too, so we assume it's an apple-growing area.
For dinner it was fried chicken, again, this time sweet chilli so not hot. Not healthy either but delicious!

We're staying here overnight, saving the biggest hill climb of the trip for tomorrow.
