Day 11: Korea Cross Country Cycle Route
Andong & Hahoe Folk Village
Today was all about the Andong International Maskdance Festival.
We started off the morning with a wander through the market streets, weaving past stalls piled high with chillies and garlic.
From there it was straight into the festival atmosphere at Talchum Park, where we joined in the festivities with roving buskers, food stalls, traditional song and dance, and no shortage of photo ops with some huge masks. We watched ice cream vendors have a bit of fun teasing (and tricking) the kids with the delivery of their cones, very entertaining. There was also a display of masks from all around the world, plus a great collection of marionettes.
In the afternoon we caught a bus out to Hahoe Folk Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the same family line have lived for 600 years. We wandered among the traditional thatched houses and gardens, had a go at traditional food grinding, and visited a 600-year-old sacred tree.
The bus ride back to Andong in the early evening was an adventure of its own. Our driver seemed to think he was auditioning for a rally car team, weaving through traffic and hitting a top speed of 101km/h in a 60 zone. We breathed a sigh of relief stepping off the bus in one piece.
