Day 12: Korea Cross Country Cycle Route
Andong and its Maskdance Festival
We took a short early morning cycle out to Andong Dam and Korea's longest wooden bridge. It was a still, foggy morning, and it gave the bridge over the river, with its mountain backdrop, a surreal feeling.
Nearby we found a peaceful park, complete with a stream and a water wheel. Finding these hidden gems off the tourist path is always a special travel moment. We crossed another decorated bridge and passed a slightly crooked seven-story pagoda on our way back into town for more of the festival.
Today we watched several shows including a traditional Korean theatre performance with a history dating back 120 years. For dinner we tried jjimdak, a local speciality of braised chicken with vegetables and noodles. Very tasty.
Afterwards we watched the Global Mask Parade weave its way through the streets, and I even joined in with some parade participants from various countries for a bit of dance fun. (see video link above) A great finish to our time in Andong and its festival.
Back on the bikes tomorrow.
