Day 26 – Korea Cycle Route
Seomjingang Bike Path: Mangdok to Amnok Village
Leaving Mangdok this morning, the river was calm and pretty in the early light. We passed yet another themed toilet block, this time mailboxes. So far we've had bicycles, a piano and boat toilets!
The next surprise was a collection of totem poles, each with a different facial expression. Further along, a beautiful red bridge threw a shimmering reflection onto the river, with a mountain backdrop to finish the picture.
Much to my dismay, this area is fascinated with toads (my irrational fear), and there were many toad statues along the river today. 😱
We stopped at the Hwagae Traditional Market for a look and some lunch, but went a bit non-traditional with tempura. I didn't fancy eating whole small fish, head, tail and all, so we pointed at something that looked like fish fillets & calamari. It turned out to be vegetables, so it was a vegetarian lunch today!
Further on we climbed the Tree Tower Observatory for some great views and visited the Fish Ecology Centre. Then we stowed the bikes and took a short minibus ride up to Saseongnam Hermitage, perched on the cliff edge. Very spectacular! The ride up and back was another story, with the bus drifting around steep mountain corners, with the smell of hot brakes filling our nostrils. We were very happy to be off it.
A little more scenic river cycling brought us to our small-town hotel nestled in the mountain valley overlooking the river. Another varied and wonderful day cycling through Korea.
