Mt Gipps & The Birdcage (hut)

A wet day so just a short hike to find an old hut along the Rabbit Proof Fence.

Before we even arrived to the start of our walk we were treated to a magnificent rainbow just out of Beaudesert.

Arriving at the border gate on Lions Road we were encased in cloud and light rain. It was on with the rain jackets and "lets get moving".

The walk immediately began its steep climb following the Rabbit Fence along the QLD/NSW border. We ascended 450m in 2km, before a more gentle last kilometre to the old hut. Most of the fence line is relatively clear with just a few areas overgrown with lantana and tree fall. These parts involved a bit of secateurs use to clear a path and ducking under fallen trees.

I'll let our photos tell the story.

A couple of very wet hikers at the finish.

Length of Hike

6 km approx

Time

3 hours approx

Best Time to do

Anytime, a clear day would probably give great views.

Difficulty

Medium only because some clearing or pushing through overgrown vegetation may be required, otherwise it is an easy hike. (please note: stay on NSW side of fence, QLD side is private property)
